The Government of Zambia and all its peoples will surely thank you ultimately for what you have both achieved. I have been to a number of Education Centres for conservation all over the world in the forty years that I have been involved with wildlife but have NEVER experienced such an example of dedication and inspiration -your Centre is unique and all I can say is "congratulations!'

This special edition of the Chipembele Newsletter is dedicated to the valiant fundraising efforts of Lance Williams. Lance is undertaking a sponsored cycle ride for Chipembele and will be cycling from London to Paris in September.

Laura and Lance at Mfuwe Secondary school
Lance is the boyfriend of our niece, Laura. They both visited Chipembele last year and fully involved themselves in everything that was going on. Like us they loved the wildlife, the scenery, the climate and the people. But what impacted on them most was the appalling state of the local schools.

When Lance got back home to the UK he was determined to try and raise funds for Chipembele and enrolled himself on a fully organised sponsored cycle ride. He has already started training (for those of you who know High Wycombe it includes cycling the mile up Marlow Hill on his way to work!) and the donation line is open.

The tour is part of a fully organised sponsored cycle ride of 450km from London to Paris over 4 days, with the finishing line under the Eiffel Tower.

  • 12th Sept - DAY 1: 125km - London to Calais
  • 13th Sept - DAY 2: 120km - Calais to Abbeville
  • 14th Sept - DAY 3: 110km - Abbeville to Beauvais
  • 15th Sept - DAY 4: 95km - Beauvais to Paris
  • 16th Sept - DAY 5: Half day in Paris then Eurostar back to London!
Sleeping arrangements in the girls dormitory
Having visited the boys and girls dormitories at Mfuwe Day Secondary School, Lance was shocked at the terrible conditions they were living in. 50 girls sleep on the floor of a small, 3-bedroom rented house with no furniture, no electricity, no running water, no kitchen or bathroom. There are just two outside drop toilets. He therefore decided that the funds raised would all go to the Chipembele Dormitory Appeal.

Chipembele Trust (UK) has been running an Appeal for funds for a new 48 bed girls dormitory for some time and we are soon about to start constructing. However funds are tight and still more are needed for electrification, bunk beds, mattresses and lockers.

Lance has a page on the Just Giving website. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor him: Chipembele Trust will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. 100% of your donation will go directly on the project and nothing will be taken away for admin etc.

If you would like to support Lance in his fundraising efforts and in doing so make a contribution to the Dormitory Appeal please click on the following link to his page on the Just giving website:

Please support Lance if you can and in doing so help improve the basic living standards and comfort of some Zambian pupils so that they can also concentrate better on their studies.

With very best wishes,
Steve and Anna
