Chipembele Wins Two Energy Globe Awards

In November 2011 Anna travelled to Austria to a gala evening at the Energy Globe Awards for environmental sustainability. There, on behalf of Chipembele, she proudly received the National Award for Zambia and the International Award in the category of Youth. Chipembele was also runner-up in the World Award from over 1000 international applicants.   The Youth Award was a large and heavy trophy weighing 17kg, which Anna proudly brought back to Zambia and it now takes pride of place in the entrance hall of the Centre.

As it’s not very often we get to see a bit of glamour at Chipembele here are a selection of photos that describe the event better than words...

Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust, Zambia has won the Energy Globe Award 2011 in the category of Youth. Chipembele’s nomination, selected by the Energy Globe Award committee was one of over 1500 applications. Co-founder and Director of Chipembele, Anna Tolan was presented with the Award at a Gala Event in Wels, Austria on 25 Novemeber 2011. The win comes on the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Chipembele Wildlife Education Centre.

Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust is located in the South Luangwa Valley in the Lupande Game Management Area in the Eastern Province. Established in 1999, Anna and Steve Tolan founded the centre on the banks of the Luangwa River on land gifted to the Trust by the late Chief Kakumbi XI. In May 2001 Chipembele opened the doors of their world class Wildlife Education Centre. The centre has a classroom, a library and an extensive natural history interpretive display. Hundreds of children from 6 local schools visit Chipembele each year for environmental education and awareness curriculum. Anna and Steve are now permanent residents of Zambia and have dedicated their lives (and life savings) to the education of the children and young people of this area to help conserve the rich and diverse wildlife and beautiful environment of the South Luangwa Valley.

Anna Tolan said “It is such an honour to win the Energy Globe Award in the category of Youth when so many amazing programmes have been nominated. The young people are the real stars of conservation”. Mrs Tolan thanked the Energy Globe Foundation for her Award.

The Energy Globe Award, founded in 1999, focuses on global awareness building for saving energy, energy efficiency, climate change, efficient use of resources and to keep the planet livable for all species.
